The Gift of Feeling

Ever wanted to give a gift that goes beyond the actual gift itself? The true spirit of a gift is the feeling behind it, and what you really wish to give (as opposed to “hand over”) to the receiver.

Revive the Inner Child

Growing up means taking on the baggage and stresses of the passing years. When things get rough, we may long for the dreamy, carefree moments of childhood (even if there weren’t many of them). Memory is an awesome thing, and a gift that “takes you back” can reawaken the child within and revive some old ideals that can solve today’s problems.

A good old-fashioned music box can provide a simple soundtrack to a reminiscing session. Or opt for a modern day music box (an mp3 player!) preloaded with memorable songs from years gone. You may have to do a bit of research to get this one right!

Nowadays, Barbie may be the butt of rude jokes, but the love for her style is still alive and kicking. The gift of an old Barbie doll (instead of them new fangled ones) can bring back all sorts of memories and childhood dreams. Add a twist by picking an outfit that the gift receiver often wears, and piece together a little replica for Barbie.

More Ideas…

  • Put together a scrapbook of old photos, letters, mementos and clippings.
  • If you have access to old music and film footage, put together a video collage.
  • Special perfumes, incense or essential oils – smell is the strongest memory trigger!

Soothe the Savage Beast

Stress seems to be inevitable, whether at work or play. Even sitting around all day can make you anxious! With stress-related health problems on the rise, the gift of calm in turn offers a gift of health and well-being.

With so many technological possibilities, a lamp can now be more than a piece of lighting. Did you know that soft, ambient lighting has a soothing effect on the mind? The Ambient Orb Device combines function with form – changes colour as it monitors the stock market, the weather, pollen count or even your IM buddies! Or for something less functional (and less pricey), the Mathmos Aduki is a rechargeable piece of ambient lighting. But if you don’t like colour and want something even more affordable, a simple Balloon Lamp adds a soft glow to a shady spot.

Smell is another powerful emotive. A simple, soothing aromatherapy kit can include a burner, candle and scented oils. Lavender oil is most commonly touted for its relaxing properties, but as smell is such a subjective sense, get to know the likes and dislikes of the one who will be using your gift. Smells are often associated with feelings and experiences too, so giving a smell linked to a happy experience will offer a lovely calming gift.

More Ideas…

  • If the gift is for a workmate, offer to take over some work so he/she can take a day off.
  • Day spa vouchers are always a fashionable gift, and many places offer pampering and massage packages for decent prices.
  • You might think the gym is the last place to go to relax, but fitness fans will tell you that a good workout leaves you feeling great after. If you can’t afford a full membership, prepaid class passes fit nicely in an envelope with a little card.

What else?

When a gift is deemed one that “keeps on giving”, it is more than the object passed from hand to hand. A gift of feeling requires exactly that – a little feeling and a little thought…

What do you feel for the person receiving the gift, and what do you think is the best way to express that?
